During the Middle to Late Pleistocene epoch, multiple hominin species within the genus Homo (the same genus as modern Homo sapiens) existed. This study reports a new hominin fossil (Homo longi sp. nov. Ji & Ni, 2021, dubbed "Dragon Man"), providing new insights into the research on human origin and dispersal. This specimen was discovered in Harbin City, Heilongjiang Province, Northeast China. Using uranium-series isotopic dating, its age was determined to be approximately 146,000 years ago, corresponding to the Middle Pleistocene epoch. It exhibits both primitive and derived morphological features. For example, it possesses primitive traits such as large, square orbits and thick, elongated supraorbital ridges, while also featuring relatively low and flat zygomatic bones. This cranium is remarkably large, with a volume roughly one-fifth larger than that of modern Homo sapiens crania; its endocranial volume is 1420 ml, comparable to that of modern humans, indicating that Homo longi had a relatively high level of intelligence. Homo longi may have had a wide distribution across northern Asia. Researchers speculate that this cranium belonged to a male individual aged around 50 years or younger, who was robustly built, adapted to the cold climate of high-latitude regions, and subsisted on hunting, gathering, and even fishing, similar to modern Homo sapiens. The 3D reconstruction data of the Harbin Homo longi cranium are stored and uploaded in AVI video format. This dataset was generated via X-ray computed tomography (CT) scanning, 3D reconstruction and rendering of the Harbin Homo longi specimen. The videos are generated along three distinct rotational directions corresponding to the X, Y, and Z axes, respectively. This dataset includes the PDF of the original paper and the original-resolution figures from the paper (including those of the fossil, stratigraphy, phylogenetic tree, etc.), which can be directly cited with authorization.
