Data and Rcodes for studying natality of social mammals bred in zoos during COVID-19 lockdowns

The data set was used for the article "No baby boom of social mammals in European zoos consecutive to COVID-19 lockdowns " published as a pre-print in bioRXiv (doi: 10.1101/2025.03.05.641480v1). The data set consists of 9 distinct elements: - The first element labelled "1.Summed_data_per_country.csv" is a table in .csv format (Excel software) summarising the yearly number of births (recorded in 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021), the number of births recorded in the births observation time windows [2018-2020] and [2020-2022], life history traits and management in a breeding programme for each of the 34 studied species. - The second element labelled "2.Species_data.csv" is a table in .csv format (Excel software) corresponding to the database of life history traits and whether managed in a breeding programme for each of the 34 studied species. - The third element labelled "3.Births_data.csv" is a table in .csv format (Excel software) corresponding to an extract of the database of births that was used for the analyes. In this extract, the database is restricted to the first 21 raws because of confidentiality [All raw data used for this study (Species360 Data Use Approval Number 83970) cannot be publicly shared, as Species360 is the custodian (not the owner) of their members’ data. Raw data are accessible through Research Request applications (form available at https://conservation.species360.org/data-sharing/)]. - The fourth element labelled "4.covid-19_responses_2022-08-25" is a table in .csv format (Excel software) corresponding to the database of responses to COVID-19 in European countries that was used for the analyses. - The fifth element labelled "5.Data_Lockdowns.r" is a code in .r format (R software) corresponding to the script used to generate the database of zoo closure periods used in the analyses. - The sixth element labelled "6.Analysis_byYears.r " is a code in .r format (R software) corresponding to the script used to compare the number of births across years. - The seventh element labelled "7.Analysis_byWindowsObservation.r" is a code in .r format (R software) corresponding to the script used to analyse number of births in periods following the lockdowns and corresponding to any conception during closure (from 2020 to 2022), as compared with the same periods in the two previous years (2018 and 2019). - The eigth element labelled "8.PowerTest.r" is a code in .r format (R software) corresponding to the script used to perform the power tests. - The ninth element labelled "readme.txt" is a text in .txt format with further explanations regarding the files, notably the variables of the databases.
