Respiratorysyncytialvirus(RSV)isacommonrespiratoryvirusthataffectslargenumbers,mainlyofchildrenyoungerthanfive.TheburdenofRSVincludesnotonlyillhealthforthechildrenwiththevirus,whichinseverecasesresultsinhospitalisation,intensivecareandevendeath;butalsotheemotionalandpracticalburdenontheaffectedfamiliesandcarers;andtheimpactthathasonproductivityintheeconomy;alongsidethecostsofprovidinghealthcare.WereviewedrecentliteratureandpublisheddatarelevanttotheUKandusedthisinformationtomodelthecoststothehealthcaresystemandtothewiderUKeconomyintermsofproductivitylossesofparents/carers.WefoundhealthcarecostsandproductivitylossesintheUKresultingfromRSVinchildrenyoungerthanfivetotalapproximately￡80millionannually.Thesecostsaretheconsequence,inpart,ofanestimated467,000GPvisitsperyearintheUKforchildrenagedunderfivewithRSVand34,000hospitalisations.Ourreportalsopresentsadditionalmaterial,identifiedintheliteraturereview,onthehealthimpactsonaffectedchildrenandthenatureoftheburdenonparentsandfamiliesofcaringforayoungchildwithRSV.TheconsequencesofRSVareshort-termforthemajorityofcases,butforsometherearelongtermsequelaeincludingpoorerrespiratoryhealthinlaterlife.RSVisalsoresponsibleforthedeathseachyearintheUKofanestimated33childrenunderfive.KeyFindingsAnnualhealthcarecostsandproductivitylossesintheUKofchildrenunder5yearshavingRSVtotalapproximately￡80million.Thisequatestoameancostof￡97fortheNHSperchildunder5withRSV.Justover￡14millionofthe￡80millionisduetoproductivitylosses,￡1.5millionduetoout-of-pocketexpensesincurredbyparents/carersandtheremainingnearly￡65millionduetohealthcarecosts.Theestimatedcostsare,inpart,duetoanestimatedannual467,230GPvisitsand33,937hospitalisationsforUKchildrenunder5withRSV.EstimatessuggestthateachyearintheUK33childrenunder5diefromRSV.WhilemostcasesofRSVresultinshort-termimpacts,somechildrenmayfacelong-termrespiratoryissueslaterintheirlife.Weestimatethatchildrenagedupto1yearsincur49%ofthetotalannualcostofRSVinchildrenunderfive,despiteonlymakingup10%ofthetotalpopulationofunder5's.Childrenbornprematurelyaccountfor19%ofthetotalcostburdenofRSVinunder5's.
