Vector-CHIKV interactions are studied by observing transcriptional changes during key steps of virus life cycle into the mosquito (i.e., midgut penetration and escape, hemolymph dissemination, salivary glands invasion). Ae. albopictus RM strain mosquitoes (collected and reared in Rome, Italy) were used for the infections with CHIKV (strain collected in Italy during the 2007 outbreak in Emilia Romagna region - Rezza G, et al. [2007] Lancet 370 [9602]:1840-1846) and for control naïve blood feeding. Three independent infection experiments were performed.
