Part-Time Working Men and Househusbands (1st Wave)

Description of the job situation at home and at work. Reasons for
reduction of company work and satisfaction with situation.

Topics: importance of areas of life; ideal family size; educational
goals; political interest; social moral orientations; time perspective
for remaining househusband or employed part-time; planned return to
full-time work; increase in number of working hours without change of
employer; reasons for interest in full-time employment; current
employment status and professional position; year of marriage and, as
appropriate, year of divorce or death of spouse; begin of current
partnership; date of birth of respondent as well as of partner;
detailed information about education and course of employment; school
degree, education status and employment status of partner; needy
persons in the household; help in the household; number of persons in
the household; religiousness; possession of a telephone.

The following questions were additionally posed to those currently
employed part-time: job satisfaction in the former full-time
employment; time of change to part-time work; arrangement of working
hours; steady working hours or flextime arrangement; time worked each
week; overtime arrangement and leisure time compensation; attitude to
overtime; commuting times to work; paid secondary occupation;
self-assessment of chance of being hired after loss of job; most
important reasons for change to part-time employment; difficulties in
achieving the desire for part-time employment in the company; person
who caused the difficulties; necessity to change employers for
part-time employment; job satisfaction after changing to part-time
employment; influence and attitude of partner to part-time employment;
reactions of social surroundings to the decision; voluntary or
involuntary decision for part-time work; changes in leisure activity
compared to earlier; division of tasks in the household and in raising
children as well as child care; birthday and sex of children;
handicapped child; child care by further persons or babysitter; desire
for children; restrictions from changed financial situation.

To men active as househusbands at the time of interview the
above-mentioned questions were posed in slightly modified formulation
but containing the same content.

The questions about company situation during part-time work were
omitted here entirely.

Interviewer rating: interest in a follow-up survey and agreement with
retention of the address by the survey institute; presence of other
persons during the interview and their relationship to respondent;
intervention of third parties in the interview; willingness to respond
and assessment of the reliability of information.

Also encoded were: length of interview; month of interview and year of
interview; identification of interviewer and sex of interviewer; age of
interviewer.
