Nitrifiers in activated sludge treating landfill leachate

Due to the future increase of waste, further effective treatment for landfill leachate is needed. The later period of landfill harboring a relatively high concentration of ammonia, salt, and methanol that added as an electron donor to compensate for the short carbon source, has not been fully investigated so far. In this research, the genome-centric approach using metagenome shotgun sequencing rendered fine quality genomes of nitrifiers. Good quality draft genomes of a new lineage Canonical Nitrospira and a new species Comammox Nitrospira were obtained. This research expanded the understanding of the community of nitrifiers and the relationship between them in a unique environment of 1% saline-activated sludge. The existence of new comammox and new lineage of Nitrospira sheds light on not only further diversity of Nitrospira but the possible existence of unknown nitrogen conversion in brackish environments.
