To establish appropriate preventive measures and to be able to implement rapid responses when bacterial pathogen outbreaks occur in Haiti, it is necessary to know which pathogens are present in the environment. In this study we determine the feasibility of deep 16S rRNA gene sequencing for the detection of water-borne bacterial pathogens in environmental water sources, and to evaluate the presence of Leptospira species in Haiti.
