Journal : Key Competencies and Professional Needs for an Effective Architectural Practices
This study examines the key performance attributes and professional needs of architects, with a focus on how these factors influence their daily practice. The research identifies vital competencies, such as understanding client goals, addressing user needs, and knowledge of material performance, which are fundamental to successful architectural practice. These findings reinforce previous studies that highlight the importance of technical expertise alongside strong communication skills and the ability to align with client expectations. Additionally, the study underscores the professional needs of architects, such as open communication, autonomy in decision-making, and a manageable workload, which together create a conducive work environment. These insights resonate with existing literature on job satisfaction and organizational effectiveness, emphasizing the role of supportive structures. Through the use of a structured questionnaire and the Relative Importance Index (RII), the study ranks these competencies, revealing that architects place the highest value on communication, coordination, and workplace conditions that foster collaboration. The research also suggests that future studies should explore how architects incorporate the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) into their practice, particularly SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production), and SDG 13 (Climate Action). This study advocates for further examination of how IAI-registered architects are adapting to global sustainability challenges, transitioning from traditional “master builders” to modern professionals committed to sustainable development.
