The predominant fecal microbiota of pre-school children at birth until weaning was Bacteroides-Bifidobacteria, which was present in low abundance in the fecal, vaginal and breast milk samples of the mothers. The fecal microbiota profiles of children and mothers converged after weaning to become Prevotella-type, with low abundance in Bifidobacterium. At 48 months, an adult-like fecal microbiome was established.
