The Fusarium sambucinum species complex consists of over 70 phylogenetically distinct species. Some members of the complex are of agricultural concern because they cause crop diseases and produce mycotoxins. All genome sequences of members of the complex that have been analyzed to date included genes that confer the ability to produce trichothecene mycotoxins and the pigments carotenoids and fusarubins. Subsets of species also have genes that confer the ability to produce the mycotoxins zearalenone and enniatins.
