The first goal is to establish a shotgun metagenome database of Illumina paired-end reads from the prairie vole (Microtus ochrogaster) from multiple individuals housed in the same colony (within-colony gamma diversity). This will be used as the basis for taxonomic assignment of the most abundant strains from individual animals before and after treatment with inoculation strains. Microbiome alteration is one of the phenotypes to be assayed in animals treated with inoculum. The other phenotypes to be assayed are behavior and neurochemical.
