Using nanopore sequencing we generated a long read genome for Phodopus sungorus (Siberian hamster). We also generated a Illumina short read genome to improve the base calling. We aimed to generate an improved assembly to create an annotation for the Siberian hamster which can be made publically available and be used for the analysis of RNA-seq datasets. Specifically, this species is a model for daily torpor and seasonal changes in physiology induced by day length (photoperiod). This work was undertaken as part of the arctic seasonal timekeeping initiative (ASTI) which aims to uncover the mechanistic basis of seasonal timekeeping mechanisms.
