The Hohenpeissenberg ozone DIAL measures stratospheric ozone profiles from about 15 to 50 km altitude (by differential absorption) and stratospheric temperature profiles from about 28 to 80 km altitude (by Rayleigh backscattering). An old system running since 1987 was supplemented by a new and improved system in 2016. Since January 2018, the new system provides the operational NDACC profiles. The lidar provides about 80 to 100 nightly mean profiles per year, on clear nights since September 1987. A XeCl Excimer laser produces light pulses at 308 nm that are absorbed by ozone. A tripled NdYAG laser produces light pulses at 355 nm, which are not absorbed by ozone. The backscattered light at 355 nm then provides the temperature profile.
