The Recovery study investigated changes that occur after being on a high-fat diet with high cholesterol (0.4% w/w or 1 mg/kcal) (HFD-HC) for a long period of time (20 months) and then during a chow recovery period with an anti-miR-33 or vehicle treatment. Targeting this microRNA was intended to increase HDL levels and improve cholesterol efflux, and consequently stimulate regression or stabilization of atherosclerotic lesions in the NHPs.
