The structural glaciology, ice marginal landforms, sediments and movement of the Lower Wright Glacier, Wright Valley, Antarctica

The structural glaciology, ice marginal landforms, sediments and movement of the Lower Wright Glacier, Wright Valley, Antarctica was investigated over several seasons. Preliminary work was completed with mapping, surveying and logging ice marginal sediments and landforms of the Lower Wright Glacier. Ice was sampled from moraines at the left margin of the glacier and from the contact between glacier ice and lake ice. Some ice was stored for analysis overseas but some of the ice was melted and filtered to determine debris concentrations, recover sediment within the ice and to store liquid samples (5L) for chemical analysis. A 12m tunnel was cut into the base of the glacier and strain arrays, plumb lines and displacement transducers were installed in the glacier to monitor movement and deformation of the tunnel over several seasons. Ice was sampled from the basal zone of the glacier and ice cores were sampled from the ice dammed Lake Brownworth. The cores were analysed for stable isotopes, major ions, total gas content and gas composition.
