Nipponoluciola cruciata (Japanese firefly) genome sequencing project

The twinkling of fireflies has been a subject of great interest and scientific study for many years. Nipponoluciola cruciata are endemic to Japan, inhabiting only a few areas of the Japanese archipelago. Although some bioluminescent genes that are widely used in biotechnology have been investigated in this species, comprehensive analysis from a genome-wide perspective has not yet been conducted. Here, we sequenced Japanese fireflies to construct a high-precision genome assembly and annotation.
