Endosymbiotic bacterium Genome sequencing. Solemya velum gill symbiont strain:WH

The goal of the project were to obtain the genomic sequence of the chemosynthetic symbiont of a coastal bivalve host, Solemya velum. The symbiont uses the energy of reduced sulfur compounds in its environment to drive carbon fixation, providing its host with a source of energy and cellular building blocks. The genomic sequence helps understand the genetic and metabolic capacities of the symbiont and the evolution of the host-symbiont association.
