Streptomyces are mycelial bacteria adapted to grow on soil. They have become important producers of biomolecules with medical applications, but their growth in industrial fermenters is challenged by their peculiar morphology: the hyphae tend to clump and grow as large pellets, which grow slowly and present diminished protein production.An experimental evolution strategy was implemented to select strains of S. coelicolor with dispersed morphology. One strain thus obtained, 2L12, presented reduced pellet size without differentiation or secondary metabolism affectations. This strain was studied at genetic, genomic and transcriptomic levels.
