Diffusion profiles at olivine-spinel contacts and XANES on chromite, Norilsk, Moinui (Hawaii), Jinchuan and Mirabella.

The purpose of this experiment is to analyse the iron speciation in chromite as well as the diffusive exchange between chromite and the minerals which enclose it (clinopyroxene, sulphides and olivine) within the world-class Ni-Cu sulphide deposits of the Noril’sk-Talnakh camp in Arctic Siberia and compare with other Ni-Cu deposits and barren localities. These deposits are thought to have formed by extensive assimilation of sulphate-rich country rocks in small magma conduits. We aim to identify mineralogical signals that arise from this genetic process.
