Peach is the most genetically characterized species in the genus Prunus . A peach tree in an orchard is composed of two genotypes. The trunk and canopy, chosen on the basis of fruit characteristics, is grafted onto a rootstock, chosen on the basis of resistance to soil pathogens. Linkage maps for the pertinent traits of each of these components are necessary to maximize the breeder's efforts.
