Lines of Conflict of Egyptian Society 1986-1988: Remigration, Segregation, Islam (Survey of Returned Migrants from 6 Egyptian Villages)

Family and financial situation of returned migrants as well as their
housing situation. Information on labor migration, job satisfaction
and working conditions during migration as well as effects of
migration.
Topics: The questionnaire is organized into 8 survey parts: 1.
Fundamentals: personal attitude as well as wife´s attitude to the
head of household; marital status; personal education level as well
as wife´s education; personal primary and secondary occupations as
well as those of wife; size of household; number of children; type of
family; life in a small family since returning or even before
migration.
2. House and new household objects: number of rooms; presence of
running water, electricity, kitchen and toilet in the house;
possession of durable consumer goods.
3. Agricultural land, agricultural machines, working animals:
ownership of land; size of owned or leased land; cultivation of the
land before and after migration as well as up to the present;
ownership of modern agricultural equipment; ownership of animals.
4. Labor migration: number of stays abroad; host country during
stays; time and length of the last work migration; reasons for
migration; reasons for return; costs of the trip abroad and financial
source; taking care of travel formalities; employment before and
during migration; agent providing work abroad; relatives or
acquaintances in host country; living and housing situation in host
country; accompanied or visited by family members during the last
migration; reasons for family visit; leisure activities; new
friendships during the migration; perceived foreignness or
home-sickness in host country; year of return and time elapsed since
return.
5. Degree of job satisfaction in host country, acquisition of new
knowledge, working conditions, migrant´s view of the host country:
performing new activities and acquisition of new abilities during the
migration; job satisfaction; judgement on working and living
conditions in the host country; judgement on economic and social
conditions of host country compared to Egypt; perceived faults of
host country; payment for social insurance at home or in host
country; perceived personality changes from the stay abroad.
6. Effects of labor migration; problems that the migrant had
subsequent to return: perceived effects of work abroad on the
village, the family, the children as well as on the role of women as
wife; changes in the role of women after return from abroad; assumed
attitude of village residents and relatives to the returned migrant;
return problems; work activity after return; time of resumption of
work; reason for waiting and for non-resumption of work.
7. Savings and investments: amount of last monthly income abroad;
judgement on income compared to personal expectations; funds
transfers to the family and form of transfer; taking savings along or
reasons for leaving them behind; information on use of savings for
improvements in the house, new acquisition of durable consumer goods,
purchase of property, farm land, agricultural equipment and livestock
as well as miscellaneous expenditures and acquisitions; realization
of a personal project in the area of trade and investment as well as
type of project; presence of a comparable project in the village at
an earlier point in time; information on the use of modern machines
and equipment in one´s project; project partners; number of
employees; realization of personal migration goals; migration goals
and also goals not realized and the reasons for this; interest in
future migration; reasons for migrating again or for refusing further
migration.
8. Cooperation/membership in various activities/organizations:
memberships as well as village leadership functions.
