The intestinal epithelium is a rapidly renewing cellular compartment. This constant regeneration along the crypt-villus axis is a hallmark of intestinal homeostasis and requires a tightly regulated balance between intestinal stem cell (ISC) proliferation and differentiation. The dysfunction of intestinal homeostasis and regulation drives the development of tumorigenesis, such as colorectal cancer and small bowel adenocarcinoma. To explore the key factors maintaining intestinal homeostasis and regulating cell fate determination, we investigated transcriptomic changes between the intestinal crypt and villus.
