Effect of nitrate on the oral microbiome

Using saliva samples from a cohort of the DINO study participants, we aimed to compare the effect of dietary nitrate via pharmacological supplementation or nitrate-rich vegetables on the oral microbiome composition, paying special attention to nitrate-reducing species. Additionally, we investigated the effect of both forms of dietary nitrate on salivary biomarkers of oral health. We further analysed potential associations between changes in the abundance of oral bacteria and alterations in blood pressure levels after following a nitrate-rich diet in form of pharmacological supplementation or nitrate-rich vegetables.
