P. antarctica strain CCMP 1871 was acquired from the National Center for Marine Algae at the Bigelow Laboratory for Ocean Sciences andtreated with antibiotics and monitored for bacterial growthuntil axenic. After extensive acclimation to low B12 conditions to deplete internal reserves, P. antarctica was grown in triplicate semi-continuous batch cultures in a factorial matrix of low and high iron (Fe) and a wide range of B12 concentrations spanning plausible in situ concentrations.
