The sablefish (Anoplopoma fimbria: Order: Scorpaeniformes) also known as Alaskan black cod, is a long-lived demersal species located mainly between 200-2700m along the continental shelf of the north Pacific ocean. It is found from eastern Japan through Alaskan waters and down to Baja California in Mexico. The sablefish is a high value American and Canadian commercial fishery, with landings of 22,000 metric tonnes in 2011. Sablefish is also in the preliminary stages of commercial aquaculture, with farms in British Columbia producing 500 tonnes in 2009.
