Wolbachia is an intracellular bacterium of arthropods that may confer reproductive modifications on its host. The strain wCer2 is found in the European Cherry fruit fly, Rhagoletis cerasi, confers one such reproductive manipulation, cytoplasmic incompatibility, and is of interest in fields of evolution and ecology, and may also be utilised in insect pest management and mitigation of the capacity of insects to vector human and animal viruses.
