Digital Archive from a Geophysical Survey and Archaeological Evaluation at Pitt Hill, Shebbear, Devon, 2016-17

This collection comprises images, site records, and survey data from a geophysical survey and archaeological evaluation carried out by South West Archaeology Ltd. on land off Pitt Hill, Shebbear, Devon in advance of a planning application for the construction of a proposed housing development. The geophysical survey indicated the presence of a medieval field system that was superseded by a post medieval field system that was subsequently removed by the late 19th century. The north-eastern corner of the site showed evidence of likely post medieval quarrying activity. An area of disturbed ground in the south-eastern corner of the site may relate to the demolition of buildings, although the readings from the gradiometer were affected by the proximity to modern metal fences. The archaeological evaluation identified and excavated a total of 22 features and it validated the results of the geophysical survey.
