Although piped gas remains the primary mean of importing natural gas in the European Union, LNG's share in total gas imports has increased significantly in recent years. In the first quarter of 2024, LNG accounted for 41 percent of all gas imports. By comparison, Russia's share had notably decreased as imports through some pipelines, such as NordStream, were halted completely.
