The MAGNT mammal collection, established in 1981, consists of about 8,400 databased specimens, the majority of which are from the Northern Territory. The collection includes 5 holotypes and 28 paratypes. Sub-collections include the historically significant Finlayson Collection from Central Australia, consisting of mostly skins and skeletal elements, and the Arid Zone Collection.
The majority of the specimens have been fixed in 10% formalin prior to being transferred into 70% ethanol for long term storage. Ethanol-fixed tissue samples have been kept for genetic studies. There is also a collection of skeletons and study skins.
Specimens can be lent to workers at other institutions upon application and the MAGNT also welcomes visiting researchers.
