This dataset includes the raw data used to calibrate nitrogen (N) mineralization models to predict unfertilized corn yield based on soil organic matter, soil texture, and cover crop residue qualities. Each observation represents a block or plot-level measurement of soil texture (percent sand, silt, clay) by the hydrometer method, soil carbon and nitrogen by elemental combustion analysis, cover crop N content determined by a measurement of dry biomass in the field multiplied by percent (%) N of the cover crop tissue, cover crop carbon (C):N ratio measured by elemental combustion analysis, soil %C and C:N ratio measured by elemental combustion, and unfertilized corn grain yield measured in field plots. The data were compiled from experiments conducted on various farm fields in central and southeastern Pennsylvania under rainfed conditions. Experimental treatments were generally replicated 4 times at each site in a randomized complete block design. Cover crop biomass measurements represent the composite sampling of two quadrats per plot and soil measurements represent the composite sampling of 12 soil cores per block or plot.
