In a method for machining workpieces (12)， a starting workpiece (12) is machined using a tool (60， 62) of a machine tool (10) and a value of a quality feature resulting from the machining process is determined on the machined workpiece (14). According to the invention， a value of a variable characterising a status of the tool (60， 62) is determined during the machining process and/or before and/or after the machining process， and a dataset is created and stored in a memory (52)， which links at least the value of the quality feature and the value of the variable characterising the status of the tool (60， 62) to one another. In a method for machining workpieces (12)， a starting workpiece (12) is machined using a tool (60， 62) of a machine tool (10) and a value of a quality feature resulting from the machining process is determined on the machined workpiece (14). According to the invention， a value of a variable characterising a status of the tool (60， 62) is determined during the machining process and/or before and/or after the machining process， and a dataset is created and stored in a memory (52)， which links at least the value of the quality feature and the value of the variable characterising the status of the tool (60， 62) to one another.
