Articles from Hong Kong Free Press about National Security Law (Jun to Aug 2020)

The corpus consists of a variety of article types, including hard news, editorials, and opinion pieces. A total of 272 articles, totalling 201,182 words, were included in the corpus for analysis. To collect relevant articles, the tagging function on HKFP’s website was used to identify articles tagged with “National Security.” Articles were collected one month before and two months after the NSL came into effect on July 1st, 2020. This approach enables an investigation into how HKFP not only represented the law but also how it prepared its readers to understand the NSL before it was enacted. To ensure the accuracy of each article’s relevance, a manual check was performed to confirm if the keyword “National Security Law” appeared in the main text. Additionally, all non-relevant information, such as boilerplate, publishing date, and author bio, was eliminated from the corpus.
