Inelastic Neutron Scattering Investigations of CEF excitations in Ce3TiAs5

Ce3TiAs5 form in a hexagonal structure (space group of P63/mcm) consisting of zig-zag chains of Ce atoms along the c-axis because of which an anisotropic Kondo effect is anticipated. Magnetic susceptibility, electrical resistivity and heat capacity data of Ce3TiAs5 show anomalies associated with a magnetic phase transition of antiferromagnetic nature at TN = 13 K, and resistivity presents Kondo lattice behaviour which together with an enhanced Sommerfeld coefficient characterize Ce3TiAs5 as a Kondo lattice heavy fermion system. We have investigated Ce3Tias5 3g powder sample synthesized using high pressure on EMU and WISH. Both these experiments revealed a long range magnetic ground state below TN. Further investigations using the inelastic neutron scattering experiment are highly desired to probe the spin wave and CEF excitations in this compound. We propose to carry out inelastic neutron scattering (INS) measurements on Ce3TiAs5 using the spectrometer MERLIN/MARI to determine the crystal field level scheme and spin wave below TN in the express mode. The INS results from MERLIN/MARI along with WISH and EMU results will give a high impact publication on this quasi-1D Ce-chian compound.
