VPRS 18879 Card Index to Hydrographic Survey Plans

This card index was created to register the survey plans located in VPRS 18782 Hydrographic Survey Plans. There are two complementary sets of index cards, one alphabetical by location of the plan, and one numerical by the sequential plan number. The alphabetical cards range from A to W, and record the plan number, title/location of the plan, and usually the date of the plan. The cards can be used to identify plans from VPRS 18782 for a specific location, as well as in some cases to discover slightly more detailed location information than is described on the plan itself. The numerical index cards range from plan number 400 to 4900, and record the plan number, title/location of the plan, and usually the date of the plan. The cards can be used to identify plans from VPRS 18782 by their plan number, which is either a three or four digit number or the bottom number of the fraction plan number. The index does not cover all of the plans in VPRS 18782, as plans in that series can have plan numbers into the 6000s. The date that these index cards were created is not clear. Some of the plans in VPRS 18782 appear to have been created much earlier than this index, including some from the nineteenth century, and a number contain other control numbers than those used in this series. It appears that this series was created later in the twentieth century, perhaps in the 1980s when the plans were microfilmed by the Port & Harbors Division, and earlier plans were incorporated into it by top numbering. Before being transferred to PROV, this series was held at the Queenscliffe Maritime Museum.
