As of April 1, 2024, there were 75 carbon pricing mechanisms in operation worldwide. The number of carbon pricing mechanisms has increased considerably since 1990 - the year Finland became the world's first country to introduce a carbon tax. Carbon pricing instruments such as carbon taxes and emission trading systems (ETS) cover almost a quarter of global emissions.
