Blood transcriptome of ICU pateints with blood stream infections on admission

Knowledge of the contribution of the pathogen to the heterogeneity of the host response to severe infection is limited. We aimed to compare the host response in critically ill patients with a blood stream infection (BSI). Patients with a blood-stream infection (BSI) were selected if they had a positive blood culture taken (day of draw) within +/-1 day of the PAXtube draw, which was measured using RNAseq. The five main BSI groups were coagulase-negative staphylococci (CoNS), Escherichia coli (EC), Enterococcus species (ENT), Staphylococcus aureus (SA), and Streptococcus species (STR). Two further patient groups are included: those with other bacterial and fungal BSIs (OTH), and those with BCs positive for multiple pathogens (MIX). We also include a non-infectious group (NI), patients who had a blood culture taken which was negative.
