Stated shipping cost by item price: a census of 1,124,045 Newegg listings, 4 September 2026
收藏资源简介:
On 4 September 2026 Newegg's complete product catalog was loaded from the Rakuten Advertising Product Catalog feed and every listing was measured for what it states about shipping. The feed held 1,124,055 records; after excluding 10 control records, 1,124,045 in-stock listings remained. This dataset is that measurement grouped into five item-price bands. Shipping cost rises with item price; shipping burden moves the opposite way. Under $10, 38.2% of 35,468 listings charged shipping, averaging $6.26, which is 121.2% of the item price. At $200 and above, 4.2% of 217,007 listings charged, averaging $20.87, which is 4.9%. On 5,661 listings the stated shipping exceeded the price of the item itself. All 1,124,045 listings stated a shipping cost: 955,811 free and 168,234 charging. Nothing was hidden and no rule was broken. If there is a harm here it lies in the ordering of the disclosure, not its absence. Columns: price_band; listings; share_charging_shipping_pct; avg_shipping_when_charged_usd; avg_shipping_as_share_of_item_price_pct. Limits. This is one retailer on one date, weighted heavily toward electronics, with 660,034 of the 1,124,045 listings in Electronics alone. It is a census of one large catalog, not a survey of American online shopping, and should not be cited as one. Identifier coverage for anyone joining it to other catalogs: 1,117,368 listings carried an MPN (99.4%) and 1,105,401 carried a UPC (98.3%). Disclosure. The author operates a price-comparison site with an affiliate relationship with Newegg, disclosed on every page of that site. It does not change the arithmetic, but readers of a study about that retailer should know it exists.
