该研究在“六五”、“七五”期间, 分别为江淮亚热带, 黄淮海暖温带和“三北”温带等不同气候区共选育了12个杨树新品种。这些品种是在充分利用美洲黑杨、欧亚黑杨、小叶杨及其杂种遗传变异基础上, 按育种目标和育种地区、正确选择亲本, 遵循育种程序, 科学的试验设计方法, 经过半个轮伐期以上的试验选育出来的。新品种的材积生长较世界公认的速生杨树无性系(69杨、?2杨、214杨、沙兰杨等)快30%一50%, 具有较优异的其他综合性状。为更替现有的杨树无性系提供了新品种。目前已在山东、河南、黑龙江、湖北、湖南等省及北京郊区推广造林68.2万公顷。
During the 6th and 7th Five-Year Plan periods of China, a total of 12 new poplar cultivars were bred for distinct climatic zones including the Yangtze-Huaihe subtropical region, Huang-Huai-Hai warm temperate region, and the 'Three-North' (Northeast, North, and Northwest China) temperate region. These cultivars were developed based on full utilization of the genetic variations of *Populus deltoides*, *Populus nigra*, *Populus simonii* and their hybrids, by properly selecting parental lines in accordance with breeding objectives and target regions, following standardized breeding procedures and scientific experimental design methods, and undergoing field trials for more than half a rotation period. The volume growth of these new cultivars is 30% to 50% faster than the internationally recognized fast-growing poplar clones (e.g., Clone 69, Clone 72, Clone 214, Salang Poplar), while also exhibiting excellent comprehensive agronomic traits. These new cultivars provide viable options for replacing existing poplar clones. To date, they have been afforested across an area of 682,000 hectares in provinces including Shandong, Henan, Heilongjiang, Hubei, Hunan, as well as the suburbs of Beijing.
