The type IIIA CRISPR-Cas system of Streptococcus thermophilus strain DGCC7710 was replaced with that of S. thermophilus strain JIM8232. The resulting strain was infected with phage 2972 and survivors (bacteriophage insensitive mutants, or BIMs) with type IIIA resistance were selected. The transcriptomic response to infection was then studied in these BIMs, together with the original strain, through total RNA-sequencing.
