Aflatoxin in food, breast milk of lactating mothers, and urine of children below 6 months and associated data

This study was cross-sectional and analytical. It was conducted in Kenya, a region prone to aflatoxin contamination. The study focused on lactating mothers with children under six months of age. It elicited data on mothers' socioeconomic and demographic characteristics, breastfeeding, and post-harvest handling of cereal through interviews using a semi-structured questionnaire. Cooked food samples were selected from a sub-sample population, mainly those susceptible to aflatoxin contamination and frequently consumed, and were available during interviews. The study also collected milk samples of lactating mothers and their children's urine. The collected samples were analyzed in the laboratory for aflatoxin levels. The survey also collected data on children's nutritional status.
