Digital Archive from Archaeological Monitoring at The Chantry, Colchester, Essex, June 2022

This collection consists of site images and records, a report, and CAD vector drawings from archaeological monitoring at 3 The Chantry, Colchester, Essex. Works were conducted by Colchester Archaeology in June 2022. Four large pits were uncovered, of which three produced datable finds. The full extent of all four features is unknown due to the limits of excavation. Two Pits produced finds of an early-mid 2nd century date including a heavily degraded coin and a large fragment of puddingstone quernstone, while the other had no datable evidence. One possible explanation is that these pits were dug for sand and gravel extraction. The fourth pit was found in the southeastern corner of the foundation trenches. The pottery found within indicates a Roman date, although the fill included a Late Iron Age bronze unit of Cunobelinus dating from circa AD 8-41. The function of this pit is unclear but its size suggests it was a quarry pit for sand and gravel extraction.
