Relationship Development in Algorithmic Dating Platforms: A SIP Perspective among Bumble Users

DATASET: Interview Transcript. Abstract: The widespread use of digital communication technology has changed the way people build and maintain interpersonal relationships, especially on online dating services like Bumble. This paper analyzes the effects of self-disclosure in the formation of interpersonal relationships among Bumble users through the lens of the Social Information Processing (SIP) framework. We use a qualitative case study approach to gain deeper knowledge of the communication experience in a computer-mediated communication (CMC) environment. Data was collected using interview techniques, online observations, and documentation. Data analysis uses thematic analysis methods that include coding, categorization, and theme interpretation. Four informants were selected deliberately based on the following criteria: active Bumble users for at least three months, engaged in conversations through the app's chat function, and Bumble users who were over 18 years old. The results of the study found that self-disclosure is done gradually and depends on the level of trust developed by the users. Each informant uses text-based engagement, emojis, and personalized interaction styles to build emotional connections and manage uncertainty in online interactions. In the Indonesian context, it was found that it can affect the way users express themselves, they tend to be more cautious when disclosing personal information compared to the Western context.
