Data and Geographic Shapefiles for "Mapping Racist Covenants in Tucson, AZ"

Beginning in the early 1900s, real estate developers, working with homeowner associations, the federal government, and other housing actors, implemented racist covenants, conditions, and restrictions (CCRs) that prevented people of color, as well as other marginalized individuals, from living in certain neighborhoods. The Mapping Racist Covenants (MRC) project tells the story of racist covenants in Tucson, specifically by mapping the geography of racial covenants across Tucson neighborhoods and subdivisions, focusing on those enacted between 1912-1968.Research Note. This dataset is a product of the MRC research effort undertaken in 2022-2023, and was created using publicly available sources that address exclusion, race, racism, housing discrimination, and segregation. The data may contain language and imagery that is offensive, including racist and ableist slurs, and may be difficult or triggering for some individuals. Despite our attempts to define these terms and provide context, the definitions are not comprehensive and may not fully capture the experiences of marginalized groups. We acknowledge that the data are a reflection of a complex history and ongoing systems of oppression, and we encourage users to engage with the information critically and with sensitivity to the experiences of those who have been historically marginalized.
