The Pearl River Estuary (PRE) has been suffering from severe anthropogenic pollution from industrial, agricultural, and municipal wastes discharge. These contaminations are causing a series of environmental issues, including decreased biodiversity, harmful algal blooms, and hypoxia. Biological indicators as one of the most important section of ecosystem health assessment, are extensively used for determining the ecological status. Water samples were collected from various locations in PRE and the adjacent coastal South China Sea and analyzed the bacterial community compositions using 16S rRNA genes amplicon sequencing.
