DJ123 and IR64 show a sharp contrast in responding to low phosphorus (P) availability. When the P supply is low, DJ123 shows a greater tolerance to low P and achieves a higher P-use efficiency (PUE). On the other hand, IR64 is sensitive to low P and demonstrates a low PUE. Here, we aim to understand how DJ123 differs with IR64 in regulating their genes in root and shoot under external and internal P stresses. The results will provide candidate genes that underlie high PUE in DJ123. The outcomes have the potential to create a target-oriented breeding strategy for developing P-efficient rice variety.
