This dataset is the Global Forest Resources Assessment (FRA) 2020. Since the 1990 FRA, assessment reports have been released every five years. Since 1946, the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) has been monitoring the world's forest resources through periodic assessments conducted in collaboration with its member states. The information provided by the Global Forest Resources Assessment (FRA) offers a comprehensive understanding of the changing patterns of the world's forests and their resources, and clear global insights support the formulation of sound policies, practices and investments that affect forests and forestry. Since the 1980s, a more bottom-up approach has been adopted, with countries increasingly participating in data collection and the process of reclassifying, estimating and projecting national data into the global set of categories. Over the same period, technical methods have been improved: assessments are conducted based on the analysis of national sources, supported by expert judgment, remote sensing and statistical modeling, with greater emphasis on assessing trends in forest area and stock.
