Vibrio vulnificus is part of the normal microbiota of estuarine waters and occurs in high numbers in molluscan shellfish and fish around the world. It is an opportunistic pathogen of human and animals that is highly lethal. Our team have been tracking the bacterial diseases of farmed eel in Fujian for about 20 years. In recent 10 years, we found that the occurrence frequency of pathogenic V. vulnificus of farmed eel has increased significantly. V.vulnificus B88 strain has been proved to be a velogen strain. By sequencing and analyzing the genome of this strain, we can further understand the virulence factors of and the pathogenic mechamisms of V. vulnificus.
