Thermosynechococcus elongatus strain BP-1. This is a uniquely thermophilic unicellular cyanobacteria that was isolated from Beppu hot spring in Japan. It is obligately photoautotrophic. It contains a large number of heat shock proteins as well as an unusually large number of type II intron sequences. It has been used as a model organism due to the stability of its photsynthetic components at high temperature.
