VPRS 12198 Register of Labour Payments

This series records the payment by the Melbourne Harbour Trust Commissioners of what appear to be wages. These payments were most likely made to workmen on the staff of the Engineering Branch, who were employed to carry out various tasks such as construction of wharves and sheds, dredging, or to contractors who were engaged to supply various materials or perform services including removing, carting, storing and delivering goods from the wharves, and cartage of mussels and other debris from South Melbourne Beach to Albert Park. The parties in this series were most often paid according to a set amount per ton, which suggests that the work performed was docking or carting of goods.The left hand column records the date and the number of tons and rate per ton and amount due. The right hand column records the date of payment and the amount paid to the worker/contractor (usually as cash, but sometimes as stores or butcher).Other information is recorded for some recipients, such as the date a particular person ceased work for the Trust.
