Ethanol bio-fuel derived from lignocellulosic biomass is a viable alternative to fossil-fuel-based transportation fuels. The pretreatment process of lignocellulose is usually accompanied by the production of inhibitory compounds, particularly furans, that can inhibit efficient sugar utilization by fermentation organisms. Plant cell wall degradation has been extensively studied in Neurospora crassa and the transcriptional profiling of this ascomycete upon exposure to furans can be exploited for manipulation of fermentating micro-organisms for effective bio-fuel production.
